The north of Chile characterized
for its dry climate has been the scene of a terrible tragedy. In 24th March an
unusual rain started, giving way to a big temporal that affected to several
localities of three regions: Antofagasta, Atacama and Coquimbo. This is the
worst rain in 80 years. The water caused overflowings and floods, so now
entire villages are covered by mud. There are thousands of houses that has been
destroyed, and it means 22000 people without a home; 49 of which are missing and 18
dead :(.
When I knew it, I
felt really sad because I can't help too much, I mean, I'm in Santiago, and I
don't have enough money to help (like
other people). I try not to watch the news, because they only show sad
images and play with the morbidity. I rather read the information on internet
and find out ways to help.
Anyway, I think
people should calm. I know it's very difficult, I really understand it, but
panic won't help at all. The last time I watched TV I saw a man shouting to the
President that he wanted his things back (morbidity),
but she can't make a house appear magically, neither the madness. I'm not
defending her or anyone, (because the government doesn’t help too much,
for example, there are still people affected by the earthquake of 2010 without
solutions), but we all should understand that we’re humans, and humans can’t do
too much when nature is manifested, especially when we don’t know the
environment in which we build our settlements. We must be patient and learn to
live in harmony with nature.
For now, people
should help their neighbor and saving lives as they can (humans and animals).
This is a process, there aren’t quick solutions, unfortunately. They must be
strong and wait for the solutions. And if the authorities fail, we must fight
in some way. We're all in this.
